An unusually heavy hailstorm ravaged banana plantations, cassava and potato gardens in Kashaka, Kashaari county, causing fear of food shortages. Trading centres, forests and hillsides were covered for hours with carpets of ice stones that looked like snow. Surprised residents said the storm started at about 1:30pm and lasted for one hour. Businesses in several areas were brought to a standstill, while some ventured out to feel the ice. 'I could not leave my house for fear of being hit by hailstones,' said Kashaka parish LC3 councillor Emmanuel Mwijukye. 'Yet I also feared staying in the house in case it collapsed.' He appealed to the Government to assist the affected villages with food aid and said he was compiling a list of needy families. 'I never experienced this before. I thought the world had come to an end,' commented another resident, Kafuruka Bukenya. At Kashaka Girls SS in Mbarara, the roof of one of the teachers' houses was blown off while the school's banana plantation was destroyed. The students said their compounds and dormitories were covered with ice. 'We should go home. It is too cold here,' said Agatha Karungi, a Senior Six student.

The LC1 chairman of Kashaka trading centre, Benon Mpamiza, said banana plantations belonging to 60 families were affected by the hail storm, while some residents had goats and hens killed. 'We are appealing to the Government to provide us with emergency foodstuff like posho. Alternatively, we might have to plant quick maturing crops like beans within the destroyed plantations,' Mpamiza added. For hours vehicles on the Mbarara-Kasese highway parked by the road due to poor visibility and fear of slippery roads. Some places like Kyatamba, Rwengyenyi and Nyamitoma had fields covered with thick layers of ice. Though hail storms are rare in the tropics, they can occur occasionally in the dry season, according to the Meteorology Department. 'In the dry season, you can have a lot of heat and accumulated energy which leads to violent thunder storms, accompanied by hailstorms,' explained meteorologist Aloysius Kagoro. Asked whether it was a result of global warming, Kagoro said it was going to be discussed in a climate change meeting in Nairobi. Hail is produced inside storm clouds and is made of solid ice. Hailstones can grow to dangerous sizes. Some can be as big as tennis balls or even a grapefruit. The largest can weigh a little under 1kg and fall at more than 50 metres per second. Hail storms can devastate entire fields of crops in a few minutes, flattening and bruising the growing plants. They can also cause serious damage to vehicles and glass roofed structures. One of the heaviest hail storms occurred in Sydney, Australia, in 1999 when 20,000 properties, 40,000 vehicles and 25 aircrafts were damaged, causing loss of $1.6b. More thunder storms and possible hailstorms are expected in the western, central and eastern part of the country, according to the weather forecast of the Meteorology Department, while the northern region will mainly be sunny and dry.</CODE>

<CODE>All 7,000 evacuees in a toxic gas leak accident on Sunday in northwest China's Shaanxi Province have returned home, said local officials yesterday night. The accident happened at about 4:30 pm Sunday in Lintong district, Xi'an,provincial capital of Shaanxi, when a tank carrying 24.5 tons of propylene tried to pass through a highway tunnel. The valve on the top of the tank broke as the vehicle was too high to get through the tunnel. More than 7,000 people in 10 nearby villages were evacuated after the leak. The tank was capped yesterday evening. Water and air in the local area were not polluted after being examined by provincial environment authorities, said Qin Zheng, secretary of the provincial government. No one was injured for inhaling the fumes, said Qin. Local police are pursuing the tank driver who escaped the scene after the accident. The tank was registered in east China's Anhui province. Propylene is a colorless and highly flammable gas. Exposure to the gas can cause irregular heartbeat, liver damage or unconsciousness.

<CODE>A miner died after a rabid bat bit him on his left ear near the Andean city of Puno, Peru. The victim, identified as Martin Moroco Turpo (29), was reportedly attacked by the bat 15 days ago. The victim's wife reported that Moroco Turpo went to a hospital in Puno to receive medical attention just 5 days ago. Despite efforts by the medical staff from Puno Hospital, there was little anyone could do for the miner due to the advanced stage of his condition. According to reports, Moroco Turpo was bitten in the area of Lechemayo, in the district of San Gaban, an area in Peru notirious for its high rabid bat population. According to Luz Herquinio, a representative from the People's Defense Office (a citizen's watchdog group) from Puno, there have been numerous cases of people bitten by bats in San Gaban. She called on authorities to take measures to help prevent new cases from occurring.</CODE>

Natural disaster research centre set up

KOTA KINABALU: A natural disaster research centre has been set up by Universiti Malaysia Sabah.
The unit is set to become the focal point for research on disasters ranging from earthquakes and landslips to floods in Sabah, Dr Felix Tongkul said during a seminar on Climate Variability, Climate Change and Global Warming in Malaysia. The centre comprising academics from different fields of expertise hopes to be able to assist the government’s efforts in mitigating and coping with natural disaster problems , he told some 200 participants attending the seminar.. Tongkul said the focus of the centre would be to study and mitigate problems related to landslips commonly occurring in Sabah, creating early flood warning systems and also studying ways to overcome erosion along rivers and beaches.

<CODE>Safety officials in San Francisco Tuesday were examining a huge landslide that threatens four buildings including a 45-unit apartment complex and a strip club. The landslide of mud, rocks and boulders occurred in the early morning hours a day after heavy rains had saturated the ground in the famously hilly California city. Amazingly no-one was injured by the landslide but 150 residents were evacuated. The landslide measured some 25 metres wide, eight metres deep and 11 metres high, San Francisco Fire Lieutenant Ken Smith said. 'Near the top side of the landslide the foundation is compromised and we are concerned that if rock continues to erode that the structures will come down,' Smith said. 'There's a pretty significant amount of rock that's come down from that mountain,' Smith said. 'This rock is coming down with great force and slamming up against these buildings.' </CODE>

<CODE>David Bradshaw has endured countless stings during his life as a beekeeper, but he got the shock of his career when he opened his boxes last month and found half of his 100 million bees missing. In 24 states across America, beekeepers have gone through similar shocks as their bees have been disappearing inexplicably at an alarming rate, threatening not only their livelihoods but also the production of numerous crops, including California almonds, one of the nation's most profitable. "I have never seen anything like it," Bradshaw, 50, said from an almond orchard here beginning to bloom. "Box after box after box are just empty. There's nobody home." The sudden mysterious losses are highlighting the critical link that honeybees play in the long chain that gets fruit and vegetables to supermarkets and dinner tables across the country. Beekeepers have fought regional bee crises before, but this is the first U.S. national affliction. In a mystery worthy of Agatha Christie, bees are flying off in search of pollen and nectar and simply never returning to their colonies. And nobody knows why. Researchers say the bees are presumably dying in the fields, perhaps becoming exhausted or simply disoriented and eventually falling victim to the cold.

As researchers scramble to find answers to the syndrome they have decided to call "colony collapse disorder," growers are becoming openly nervous about the capability of the commercial bee industry to meet the growing demand for bees to pollinate dozens of crops, from almonds to avocados to kiwis. Along with recent stresses on the bees themselves, as well as on an industry increasingly under consolidation, some fear this disorder may force a breaking point for even large beekeepers. A Cornell University study has estimated that honeybees annually pollinate more than $14 billion worth of seeds and crops in the United States, mostly fruits, vegetables and nuts. "Every third bite we consume in our diet is dependent on a honeybee to pollinate that food," said Zac Browning, vice president of the American Beekeeping Federation. The bee losses are ranging from 30 to 60 percent on the West Coast, with some beekeepers on the East Coast and in Texas reporting losses of more than 70 percent. Beekeepers consider a loss of up to 20 percent in the off-season to be normal. Beekeepers are the nomads of the agriculture world, working in obscurity in their white protective suits and frequently trekking around the country with their insects packed into 18-wheel trucks, looking for pollination work. Once the domain of hobbyists with a handful of backyard hives, beekeeping has become increasingly commercial and consolidated. Over the last two decades, the number of beehives, now estimated by the U.S. Agriculture Department to be 2.4 million, has dropped by a quarter and the number of beekeepers by half.

Pressure has been building on the bee industry. The cost of maintaining hives, also known as colonies, is rising, along with the strain on bees of being bred to pollinate rather than just make honey. And beekeepers are losing out to suburban sprawl in their quest for spots where bees can forage for nectar to stay healthy and strong during the pollination season. "There less beekeepers, less bees, yet more crops to pollinate," Browning said. "While this sounds sweet for the bee business, with so much added loss and expense due to disease, pests and higher equipment costs, profitability is actually falling." About 15 worried beekeepers convened in Florida this month to brainstorm with researchers on how to cope with the extensive bee losses. Investigators are collecting samples and exploring a range of theories for the colony collapses, including viruses, a fungus and poor bee nutrition. They are also studying a group of pesticides that were banned in some European countries, including France, to see if they are somehow affecting bees' innate ability to find their way back home.

It could just be that the bees are stressed out. Bees are being raised to survive a shorter off-season, to be ready to pollinate once the almond bloom begins in February. That has most likely lowered their immunity to viruses. Mites have also damaged bee colonies, and the insecticides used to try to kill mites are harming the ability of queen bees to spawn as many worker bees. The queens are living half as long as they did just a few years ago. Researchers are also concerned that the willingness of beekeepers to truck their colonies from coast to coast could be adding to bees' stress, helping to spread viruses and mites and otherwise accelerating whatever is afflicting them. Dennis van Engelsdorp, a bee specialist with the state of Pennsylvania who is part of the team studying the bee colony collapses, said the "strong immune suppression" investigators have observed "could be the AIDS of the bee industry," making bees more susceptible to other diseases that eventually kill them off. Growers have tried before to do without bees. In past decades, they have used everything from giant blowers to helicopters to mortar shells to try to spread pollen across the plants.

More recently, researchers have been trying to develop "self-compatible" almond trees that will require fewer bees. One company is even trying to commercialize a "blue orchard bee" that is stingless and works at colder temperatures than the honeybee. Beekeepers have endured two major mite infestations since the 1980s, which felled many hobbyist beekeepers, and three cases of unexplained disappearing disorders as far back as 1894. But those episodes were confined to small areas, van Engelsdorp said. Today, the industry is in a weaker position to deal with new stresses. A flood of imported honey from China and Argentina has depressed honey prices and put more pressure on beekeepers to take to the road in search of pollination contracts. Beekeepers are trucking tens of billions of bees around the country every year. California's almond crop, by far the biggest in the world, now draws more than half of the country's bee colonies in February. The crop has been both a boon to commercia l beekeeping and a burden, as pressure mounts for the industry to fill growing demand. Spread over 580,000 acres, or about 235,000 hectares, stretched across 300 miles, or 480 kilometers, of California's Central Valley, the crop is expected to grow to 680,000 acres by 2010.

Beekeepers now earn many times more by renting their bees out to pollinate crops than they do producing honey. Two years ago a shortage of bees for the California almond crop caused bee rental prices to jump, drawing beekeepers from the East Coast. This year, the price for a bee colony is about $135, up from $55 in 2004, said Joe Traynor, a bee broker in Bakersfield, California. A typical bee colony ranges from 15,000 to 30,000 bees. But beekeepers' costs are also on the rise. In the past decade, fuel, equipment and even bee boxes have doubled and tripled in price. The cost to control mites has also risen, along with the price of queen bees, which cost about $15 each, up from $10 three years ago. To give bees energy while they are pollinating, beekeepers now feed them protein supplements and a liquid mix of sucrose and corn syrup carried in tanker-sized trucks costing $12,000 per load. Over all, Bradshaw figures, in recent years he has spent $145 a hive annually to keep his bees alive, for a profit of about $11 a hive, not including labor expenses. "A couple of farmers have asked me, 'Why are you doing this?'" Bradshaw said. "I ask myself the same thing. But it is a job I like. It is a lifestyle. I work with my dad every day. เจ้าหน้าที่ในเขตอีสต์ มังกาไร เปิดเผยผ่านวิทยุเอลชินตา ว่า ในเขตจิบัล มีประชาชนถูกฝังใต้กองโคลนถล่มถึง 43 คน และในจำนวนนี้ 12 คน พบเสียชีวิตแล้ว ส่วนในเขตลัมบาเลดา มีบ้านเรือน 11 หลังถูกกระแสโคลนกวาดทั้งที่เจ้าของบ้านยังอยู่ในบ้าน ทั้งนี้ ก่อนเกิดเหตุดินถล่ม มีฝนตกหนักตลอด 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

เจ้าหน้าที่พบกับอุปสรรคเพราะไม่สามารถนำเครื่องจักรกลหนักเข้าไปยังหมู่บ้านที่เกิดเหตุแผ่นดินถล่มได้ เนื่องจากถนนเข้าสู่หมู่บ้านถูกตัดขาดจากแผ่นดินถล่ม ขณะที่สายโทรศัพท์ก็ถูกตัดขาด ทางด้านผู้บัญชาการตำรวจในพื้นที่ประสบภัย กล่าวว่า ค้นพบผู้เสียชีวิตแล้ว 40 ศพ จากเหตุแผ่นดินถล่ม 2 ครั้ง ในเวลาไล่เรี่ยกัน แต่เชื่อว่ายังมีอีกอย่างน้อย 29 ศพ ที่ถูกฝังอยู่ใต้ดินถล่ม
สำนักข่าวอันตาราของอินโดนีเซีย รายงานว่า แผ่นดินถล่มที่เกิดขึ้นในหมู่บ้านและตำบลอย่างน้อย 15 แห่ง สร้างความเสียหายให้แก่บ้านเรือนและยานพาหนะจำนวนมาก มีถนนถูกตัดขาดถึง 20 จุด เจ้าหน้าที่กำลังลำเลียงสิ่งของยังชีพ เช่น บะหมี่สำเร็จรูป ปลากระป๋อง น้ำมันปรุงอาหาร และกระโจมที่พักฉุกเฉิน.- สำนักข่าวไทย

<CODE>Around 1,200 residents were evacuated early Thursday morning when a part of a 12m high hillslope crashed down on a parking lot, burying 23 cars under tonnes of soil and undergrowth. The force of the landslide flipped over some cars and crushed them. The soil came to a halt mere inches away from a kindergarten housed at one of the blocks. However, no one was injured in the 4am incident. Residents from 330 units of three blocks of 15-storey high apartments in Precinct 9, were asked to evacuate by the police immediately after the incident. According to officials a special committee had been formed to study the safety of the hillslope as an open reservoir holding over 40 million litres of water sits on the hilltop. One of the official said the committee would be carrying out soil and various other tests to determine the cause and ensure the area was safe. The apartments are the residential quarters for civil servants from the various ministries in the administrative capital. Some 150 police were then dispatched to secure the area affected.

A 12-member Smart team and 36 firemen, together with five sniffer dogs, were also reined in. One resident Mohamad Haidhir Hamzah, 32, whose Naza Citra car was buried under the heap of soil, said he was woken up by a loud noise at around 3.30am but went back to sleep thinking that it was merely noise from the construction area behind his apartment in Block B. "It's usual for us to hear such noises because of the movements of construction lorries and machinery. So, I thought it was one of those times. "But then I was woken up by the police informing me to evacuate the premises immediately with my wife and toddler daughter. I didn't even have time to bring any food or clothes with me," he said. Usually he would not park his car at the lot behind the apartment. "But I came back at 5pm on Wednesday and my parking lot was already full so I had to move my car there," he said. He added the car was only a year old. Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Mohd Sidek Hassan, who turned up around 9.30am to inspect the damage and spoke to the residents, said affected civil servants could take time off to deal with the problem.

"Ikram (Public Works Institute of Malaysia) has yet to give us an initial assessment of the damage as well as the condition of the ground. "I am sure they will turn up for work as soon as the matter is settled," he said, adding that the Government would look into all matters, including the issue of aid and compensation for those affected. Putrajaya Corporation chairman Tan Sri Samsuddin Osman said it had made arrangements for residents to be temporarily placed at the community hall in Precinct 9. "I have been told by Ikram that the building is stable but they want to conduct further tests on the ground. If they decide that it will be too dangerous for the residents to return, we will arrange for them to stay in the apartments in Precinct 14," he said. Putrajaya police chief Supt Abdul Razak Abdul Hamid said the landslide measured some nine to 12-metre high and covered a three-metre wide area. สำนักข่าวเบอร์นามา ของทางการมาเลเซีย รายงานอ้างการเปิดเผยของเจ้าหน้าที่ว่า เหตุดินถล่มครั้งนี้เกิดขึ้นในย่าน Precinct 9 โดยดินหลายตันจากเนินเขาแห่งหนึ่งได้ทลายลงมากองอยู่ที่ลานจอดรถของอพาร์ตเมนต์แห่งหนึ่งที่อยู่เชิงเนิน ครอบคลุมพื้นที่ถึง 108 ตารางเมตร และหนาถึง 3 เมตร ฝังกลบรถยนต์ 23 คัน ที่จอดอยู่ในลานจอดรถดังกล่าว และว่าสาเหตุเกิดจากฝนที่ตกลงมาอย่างหนัก และต่อเนื่องตั้งแต่เมื่อเย็นวานนี้จนถึงเช้าวันนี้
