Spokane Buddhist Temple is bringing back the Obon Festival, a 500-year Japanese Buddist tradition of honoring ancestors.

The festival will be July 25 from 5 p.m to 7:30 p.m., with a Hatsubon (remembrance) service at 5, followed at 6 by Bon Odori dancing. Masks will be required during the service.

The free event will be at the temple, 927 S. Perry St., in south Spokane.

Festival goers traditionally may dress in Japanese kimono, yukata or happi coats. The dances are simple to follow.

The Odori dance will be led by an instructor and a vocalist singing traditional Japanese folk songs.

    Barre classes offered in park

The Spokane Barre offers free exercise classes on King Cole Bridge in Riverfront Park each Thursday through July 22. The one-hour classes begin at 7 p.m.

Barre is a form of physical exercise that uses a ballet barre and ballet-inspired movements to strengthen and tone the whole body. It is low impact with high-intensity cardio bursts. Anyone – novice or experienced – may join.

Participants should bring a yoga mat, water bottle and comfortable shoes.

The classes are sponsored by Providence Health Care and Riverfront Spokane.

For more information call (509) 625-6600.
